Soul Survivor
by Philip Yancey

How Thirteen Unlikely Mentors Helped My Faith Survive the Church

I came to know the author Philip Yancey through reading several of his works, including Rumors of Another World (2003), which explores the presence of the divine in everyday life; Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image (2019), an updated edition of earlier collaborations with Dr. Paul Brand; The Gift of Pain (1993); and The Jesus I Never Knew (1995), which takes a fresh look at the life and teachings of Jesus. What draws me to Yancey is not only his deep insight and the wide range of people he has interviewed—from politicians and theologians to public figures—but also his writing style, which feels personal and accessible. He often reflects on his own journey and shares what he has learned from the individuals he writes about, making his books both informative and deeply relatable.

Soul Survivor is a rare gem in Christian literature. In this book, Yancey introduces us to thirteen mentors whose lives and teachings shaped his faith. What makes this book unique is that it doesn't merely recount theological insights—it also highlights how these mentors lived out their convictions. Their lives reflect the often-quoted phrase: "Preach always, and if necessary, use words."

Take Dr. Paul Brand as an example. His love for God and for people led him to dedicate his life to serving the sick and poor in India. That alone stands as a powerful testimony and inspiration. As you read through each chapter, pay special attention to Yancey’s reflections at the end. He doesn’t just analyze these mentors from a distance; he thoughtfully engages with their lives and compares their influence to his own spiritual journey. See if their stories resonate with you as they did with him.
